The Horny Layer (stratum corneum) is the top outer layer of skin. This layer is very important to the skin; it acts as the main protective layer of the skin against UV irradiation and both physical and chemical trauma. It is also part of the waterproofing barrier that keeps moisture in the skin and obstructs the penetration of bacteria. Photo-damage and Acne cause the horny layer to build up and thicken. It can also cause the cells to develop abnormally. The natural exfoliation process slows down and one is left with a rough, thick skin. Acne and sun damaged skin can have a very thick horny layer up to 25 layers thick. How a spot forms: Skin affected by Acne can sometimes produce excess sebum, however it is not just the amount of sebum but the consistency which causes the problem. Sebum produced with this condition is usually very sticky or glue like.
Acne and ‘Free Radical Activity’ This activity is entirely abnormal and is due to oversupply of the male hormone, testosterone. Most prevalent in young male adults and women either in their teens or pre menopause, this causes ‘free radical activity’, a situation where one or more molecules lose electron and try to stabilize itself by taking a electron from a neighboring molecule, thus causing a chain reaction. The exact reason for this condition to manifest is not known and there are few medications which will give a satisfactory result without severe risk of side effects. The only treatment we have found effective to date is the application of Retinyl Palmitate, Beta Carotene and Retinol, which all classified as ‘A’ group of vitamins and which are well researched in their ability to fight ‘free radical activity’. Vitamin A is a Free Radical Scavenger. The principle which we have incorporated into our Acne treatments is that:
The products incorporated in our clinic treatments as well as for home use, have the highest concentration of the ‘A’ group of vitamins including Retionol, available on the market. Specifically developed by a plastic surgeon, for skin care in a clinical environment, the range is both affordable and widely suited to just about every skin. We have a high success rate in both adult and adolescent acne treatments. |
